More than 2100 Sephardic Jews acquired Portuguese citizenship since 2016
2018-03-14According to the Portuguese Institute of Registration and Notary Affairs, a total of 2160 descendants of Portuguese Sephardic Jews - who were initially expelled from Portugal due to religious persecution in the 16th century – acquired, since 2016, Portuguese citizenship. The majority of the successful applications came from descendants of Sephardic Jews that are either Israeli or Turkish nationals. This legislative initiative aimed at strengthening the ties between Portugal and the Jewish Community and also recognizing its historical and cultural heritage. [in Público]
